We can quibble about the severity of the sentence, but I agree that the vandal needed to be punished. We've long accepted that it is a federal offense to tamper with smoke detectors on airplanes and this is no different.

I like the way speed cameras are set up in Britain and disagree with Paul Smith who said they make people lawbreakers every day. That sounds like the common gripe that such-and-such a speed limit makes people into lawbreakers. Except for a few extreme cases, raising the speed limit won't remove the problem. The highways are full of people who will drive ten or more miles above the speed limit no matter what it is.

Everybody speeds. Therefore the speedlimits are wrong. They should be changed based on how people really drive. End of story.

The only real question is why dont they change? Money and power.

By setting artificially low limits, the state insures that they can pull over anyone at any time for any reason. Even if you wernt speeding, who would believe you, since everyone speeds? So the state makes a few bucks, and gets to interrogate people about where they're going and why. Then the insurance companies get to make a few extra bucks too, through raising your rates.

For those of you who dont believe this, I challenge you to drive around in a wealthy neighborhood at night in a beat-up old car. I guarantee, you will be pulled over for "speeding" with remarkable regularity.

Well I learned that if you are going to destroy a speed camera, you should be careful to disguise yourself when you do it so they won't identify you later.

I love to hear stories of speed cameral vandalism (not that I support it of course - I just enjoy hearing the stories!) and always try to learn something from each one.

Well.. when you don't like something ---- just tear it down ! Much like the Mexikins in Mexico are doing concerning the Presidential election. One party refused to admit defeat, so they will probably form two different parties - thus splitting the country. So when these motorist destroy something that belongs to the city for the safety of others, they should be given a looooong jail term. That outta stop that.

                      Arealpatriot,

YEs. Did you know that here in California, that is the way it works. For LA and county speed limits, they clock the average speed of motorists on a particular street, and if they are seriously all going 65, they raise the speed limit to 65! You can even use it as a defence if arrested for speeding and they haven't properly re-evaluated the speed limit on that particular street (I think it's once every 5 years), your ticket will be thown out if you know to object and file the non-compliance notice.

                        bperry,

That is how it should be done everywhere. But you have do-gooders like CodeNameHawk who know what is best for our safety, regardless of the facts, then you end up with most municipalities just using artificially low speed limits to make money.

I just beat a Red Light Camera ticket in Gardena CA. The city had it rigged for only 7 seconds of green light and EXACTLY 3 seconds of yellow although the turn lane holds 15 cars. Seems our city govt likes ticketing 16 year olds with new licenses. The light is two block from the high school. All the other streets had 11 or 12 second green light. Safety my behind!! It's all about the $6000 per month fee to Redflex and how much they can squeeze out of honest citizens. See www.highwayrobbery.net

Don't just roll over for the govt.

I hate those damn cameras. Ive had people slam their brakes on and Ive almost rear ended them due to those damn cameras. I heard that there is a spray you can buy online that you put on your license plate and when the picture is taken the image is distorted. has anyone else hear of this product? If so let me know becuase im definatly gonna buy some.

More creative resistance, the old "picture in front of the camera" trick. He could have taken a pic of the road from the same angle, printed out the image, and stuck it strategically in front of the machine. Sure, 11pm someone might have said, uh, why is it still daylight? But he probably wouldn't have gone to jail for that.

And yeah, getting rid of speed limits? Sure, why bother with licenses, school zones, or drunk driving laws at all? Why not do like Death Race 2000? Open season! That outta fix the global overpopulation problem... Of course, if everyone drove a Segway none of this would be an issue ;)

In my little city in Canada, they installed 3 red light cameras at 3 particularly dangerous intersections. They couldn't afford 3 cameras so they just switch the camera from one intersection to another. Two years later they reported that rear end collisions went up by 90% at these intersections. So the city police make a few extra bucks for red light tickets and the insurance company (government of Saskatchewan) is out thousands in the long run. In Saskatchewan the vehicle insurance is sold by the provincial government.

I laughed my @$$ off when I read that.

People slamming on their brakes out of fear of the cameras and the trick-timing of the yellow lights.

Plus, the lowering of the speed limits to inconceivably slow speeds. Speeds so slow in some areas that you have to ride your brakes constantly to avoid a ticket.
