The government has tried to use criminal penalties to prevent marijuana use for over 75 years and yet: marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually, cannabis is currently the largest cash crop in the United States, and marijuana is grown all over the planet.

You can say that again, great submission berkeley...

Marijuana is not a lethal drug and is safer than alcohol.

It is established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans; marijuana overdoses are nearly impossible, and marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. It is unfair and unjust to treat marijuana users more harshly under the law than the users of alcohol or tobacco.

I take exception with #4 and #5 and have no way to judge #1. The rest is reasonably true.

In addition to the tax revenue generated by taxing legal pot, think about how much could be saved by law enforcement and the court system.

      Imagine abolishing the DEA.

And while we are chopping wasteful and unecessary gov't programs lets get rid of the EPA, NEA, PBS, NPR, OSHA, Dept of "Education", HHS and the IRS.

And while we are at it, let's also abolish Social "Security" and send me back all my money plus a fair amount of interest. It that would happen, I could retire tomorrow with instead of waiting 10 more years and with more $.

If you stoners put half your brain towards your careers instead of worrying about smoking weed think how much better the world would be. Dont deny it, most of the fun for you guys is the fact that its "illegal".

the idea that a government, any government, can declare a plant to be illegal is ridiculous. it's like saying the gods made a mistake.

I've been in "rehab", with thousands of others forced to go there by courts as an "opportunity". And this is always without a conviction, but an "opportunity" to save a lot of legal fees.

Yeah, the criminal records certainly have ruined a lot of lives.

First, marijuana is less addictive than coffee, less harmful than tobacco or alcohol (or white sugar) to the user or society at large.

But yeah, I do feel sad for those lives destroyed by the laws surrounding marijuana.

What's even more sickening is that any convicted rapist, pedophile, or murderer can get Federal Financial Aid for higher education, while someone convicted of posession of even one joit can't.

But you can try to drum up the state referrals for your unneeded, unproven voodoo, CheifOD'd

((Almost every single one will tell you that it was marijuana that led them to other more harmfull drugs, so we are not talking about marihuana only.)) A selected few doesnt mean that everybody has gone to a more harmful drugs--lol!!! Its a loosing battle for you people to sit back and pass judgement on all smokers.I for one am quiet successful in life,I own my home-cars and Im a Computer Programmer and have a savings account big enough to choke a horse. So dont sit back and say this is ruining our lives just because a known crack head has been smoking a little pot as well doesnt mean pot is ruining their lives. Its the heavy drug users that are loosing control.Do your counceling on heavy drug users..

This man has lost everything because he couldnt control his munchies---ROFLMAO!!! Get a grip!!!!!

Think what you may stoners but I was quite careful NOT to say that everyone who does or has smoked marijuana goes on to harder drugs. And, I fully understand that there are many out there who partake and lead productive lives, congratulations to you. And, I would agree on some basis that marijuana use alone should be decriminalized simply because of how it has clogged our legal & prison system. At least then it would minimize the funding of criminal & terrorist organizations that are in the import business. But none of that negates the fact that the 10's of thousands of people all the facilities like our's treats will almost to the man say that their addictive behavior began with marijuana. For you and your ilk it may seem harmless but there are many for whom it is not.

I have mixed feelings on this subject.

I could care less what an adult does in their own home.

I worked with 2 nurses back in the 1970's who were suspected of smoking MJ at break and lunch - in an ICU no less. It was absolutely dangerous! There were several complaints made to the head nurse but nothing was done. Many of us simply started to refuse to work with them. Finally they were transferred.

I've also had the unplesant experience of driving with someone who had been smoking - an experience I'd never want to have again

So where do you draw the line - can't smoke MJ at work, can't smoke MJ and drive?

Do you go to work drunk? Do you drive drunk? I think that answers the question if your a responsible adult.

People I know just buy it from a dude down the street growing in his basement.

No drug cartels and the money goes back into the community.

Choosing between an armed with a gun, wild-eyed fanatic high on hate (who wants to "get even" with gays or black people) or an armed with a lighter, eyes half-closed stoner high on pot (who wants to go to 7-11)...who would YOU pick as less detrimental to the neighborhood?

In every place that marijuana has been legalized or decriminalized, use has gone down.Economy? Schools? Jobs?

If marijuana is smuggled in from Mexico (they only catch 10%),the seller is in Mexico, eventually the money makes it back there instead of into our economy.A recent economic study predicted that if legal, marijuana could bring in 14 billion a year into our economy.Which leads me to Schools...dont you think our schools could use a chunk of that 14 billion? To teach truthful drug education?

And then there is jobs...how about the hemp industry just for starters...the US Dept of Agriculture determined that if legal, marijuana would cost a farmer about $4 per pound to grow.If the farmer sold the stuff for $100 per pound and there was a tax of $100 per pound the cost to consumers would be 10 times cheaper (no stealing),and the farmer would be able to buy Ma that fancy little dress she's been eyeballing. In the link I gave with every study, you wont find anything like what you've heard.

Another study conducted at the expense of the taxpayer. Next there will be another study on the sexuality of cockroaches that will probably cost over a million.

If a person uses hemp without harming others why is the government being involved in personal choices. Oops, now I have brought up abortion!!!

As a former user, I agree with all reasons given.

Problem is, there are too many people getting filthy rich over busts, procecuting and further processing these otherwise law-abiding Americans. Money talks, and so the ruination of tokers goes on, and the deaths from alcohol mount up.

It's a sick society we live in.

I say make it legal and tax the heck out of it and make some money. As a nation we tried prohibition and it caused more problems than anything, thats why it was repealed. In the future this will probley be viewed in the same way. I think making hemp legal would solve a lot of problems. Think of the resources we spend enforcing that law, think how full our jails are.

Marijuana has been legal in Alaska since 1975,not many people even know this and I haven't heard a flood of reports of people dropping dead on the street.Ironically it is legal because the Alaska supreme court ruled that possession in ones home was protected under the right to privacy in the Alaska state constitution which is almost word for word, our federal constitution.

Hemp, which is different from marijuana was just legalized this year in North Dakota and has been working its way through the legislatures of 14 other states.

I think it should be legal for many reasons, I have only one problem with it comparred to drinking...when you drink it goes into your body, so if the kids are around and you want to have a drink or a beer...fine, but if you want to smoke a bowl or a joint, kids can't/shouldn't be there.

If the drunks would get high instead, I think it would cut down on domestic violence too!

In the 80's,the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA),a govt propaganda scource, conducted a poll of gay people and found that over 90% of respondants admitted to using marijuana (heres where the govt twist comes in)...therefore,since AIDS is a "gay" disease, and most gays smoke weed....marijuana causes AIDS

The gateway theory was disproven decades ago by the National Academy of Sciences .I had a friend get forced into rehab because of a drug test for work...the first thing they told him was that if you take one hit off a joint "you are an addict for life".He stopped smoking for about a month to give it a fair shot but got tired of the BS and started smoking again (his usual half a joint
