Alec Baldwin Offers Soldier Tuition Help »
Posted by: Fabienne 1 year, 4 months agoFrom the article: "Actor Alec Baldwin was so moved by the story of an 18-year-old Army soldier who is scheduled to serve in Iraq, he's going to help pay for her college education after she leaves the military. ...He - not his people - tracked down Kane's mother at a discount store where she works to offer his assistance, his spokesman said."

I wonder if our friends on the other side will get this...I mean really get this, that you can disagree with this administration, you can disagree with the war but still stand behind our solders. I hope she makes it through, how many young bright minds this senseless war has sniffed out?
I hope our congress does something to stop this war before she has to go...maybe she will cure cancer anything can happen!

Why do you think few liberals support the troops? That's a ridiculous assertion. They don't support the President.

Give me a break, man -- EVERYONE in our country supports our troops. What we don't support is our dip---t President who sent them into a war to get slaughtered because he and his staff were too arrogant and incompetent to give them a plan or the means to win it.
Leave it to the neo-con facists to spin our president's incompetence into "liberal don't support the troops" lies. You people would support anything if it had the word "Republican" on the label.
Do yourself a favor and have an original thought once in a while, instead of just blindly following and thinking what your party and Rush Limbaugh tell you to.

And the fact that this administration sent our troops into a war they didn't fully plan... is THAT supporting our troops? Or do you not recall this Rumsfeld quote:
"It is unknowable how long that conflict [the war in Iraq] will last. It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months." -in Feb. 2003
Our troops are being slaughtered by IEDs, suicide bombers and terrorists because this administration didn't account for ANY of that. Because they didn't strategize properly, and didn't budget enough money, manpower, armaments or supplies from the get-go. Our troops STILL don't have enough of all of that. And now you just want to keep them there, in an impossible situation , so they can keep getting ambushed and blown up?
And that's your definition of "supporting the troops" huh?
Wow.

Once again, a liberal is expecting a real-life event to have a predicted outcome, like the movie of the week. No one is able to predict what will happen when going into a war. War is very uncertain. Events happen that change the course. Get your head out of your a$$ and realize that there was and is a plan. The fact that we are still in Iraq doesn't prove that there wasn't a plan, just that events have happened that changed the course.
Where in the hell did you come up with all of the information that the government didn't plan or supply the troops properly? Did you firsthand go and analyze the plan? Or did you walk down the streets of Bahgdad, side-by-side with the troops? Or did you get all of your info from a media outlet that makes money by sensationalizing stories so that they appear incredible. If that is your only source of information on this issue, then go learn firsthand. Then come back and spout off like you know it all. Talk about a parrot...

I'm actually not a liberal. I was a Republican until this administration came to power and their lack of common sense drove me away. And I do have a job, thank you very much (probably making a LOT more than you do, too)
I just don't like arrogance, stupidity and incompetence in my leadership. The fact that you will defend all that in the name of politics and polemic for your party is pathetic.
I'm also smart enough to see through your lies and know that they're NOT cutting funding for the troops to fight -- they're trying to get our troops out of an impossible situation that was created by the retards in our White House.
And you want to read external links? Forget the polls and Google the phrase "vanity fair neocons" and read the article at the top of the page. Even the Neocons are smart enough to know that Bush and his cronies are a bunch of idiots. Put some sunscreen on your neck, stop watching NASCAR and wise up, boy.

Well maybe YOUR president, VP and FORMER Secretary of Defense should have properly outfitted the troops BEFORE sending them out to war. PERHAPS the same "brain trust" (and that's a HUGE stretch) should have properly strategized BEFORE sending our troops to war under FALSE pretext!!!!
That is what one who SUPPORTS their troops does!

DJREVELKY:
"Bingo! There is the liberal spin in this story."
Bingo! There is your ignorance in believing that everyone coming out of the military gets a free college education. The fact is that veterans are being shortchanged by the Montgomery GI Bill, just as they are being shortchanged at Walter Reed and the VA, just as they are being shortchanged by Bush's stoploss policy, just as they are being shortchanged by being denied psychiatric care.
http://www.sunmt.org/militaryed.html
"Approximately 95% of those who enter the military are not eligible for this maximum amount [offered by the Montgomery GI Bill]. In fact, 57% of the veterans who signed up for the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) have never seen a penny in college assistance...Thus, according to data released by the VA and the DoD, the average net payout to the 3.85 million enlistees who have enrolled in the Montgomery GI Bill program has been only $2151."

Horse manure. Those who enlist, if they get out with mind intact and an honorable discharge, get money TOWARDS college. That money is generally inadequate to put them THROUGH college.

Actually, $37,000 is more than enough for 4 years of college at most STATE universities. Tuitition at UK for example was just at $3,000 a semester last year (it may have raised).

jumpmaster1 year, 4 months ago
$37k is plenty for college unless you plan to go to Harvard or Stanford. If a student needs more money than that, why can't they work between semesters and save their money?

Read the story, understand it, then respond or you will look, as you have here, like an idiot. That all the military pays. $37000 dollars isnt bad considering that the if the min. wage hasnt gone up in how many years, why would the Military college expenses. Said thing is, im monstly conservative. $37000 is not enough to finish school, but when you do have families that dont make that much a year, it is worth it to them. College is expensive but you dont have to go to IVY League. At the closest univ, only cost about about $35000. Though I realize it is one of the least expensive anywhere. But thats at $180 an hr, with 24 credit hours each semester, and 8 semesters. I know my univ doesnt charge < $180 a semester but I am being real about it. Everyone should to!

What was the story? I guess I missed the story.
My only comment goes back to the so-called joke John Kerry said about the status of poor kids in the military.
There was a lot of noise made about something that was in part the truth. I have seen over the years how many in generation X have a complete disregard for education and find their job choices reduced to working low paying jobs. The military throws out the college education carrot and they get these kids who have few options in the civilian arena.
I want to point to the education policy in Germany. Early in the grade school years, kids are tested to see if they would best be suited to go on to college or go through the master apprenticeship program in a skill field that best suits their aptitude. Our system seems to be locked into the idea that you go to college or go work for Wall-mart.

I have talked in length to both my step-dad and uncle (both dead now) about their experiences in the CCC program. One was a teacher and the other a poor starving kid of the Great Depression era.
They both went on to serve in World War II and they felt that program was great for poor kids that needed first something to eat, a place to live, learn a skill, and working in exchange for the first three benefits on many great work programs that didn't cost the government a fortune.

I wonder if one of the biggest problems that libs have with the military is Copanies often want to hire military personel, to perform any job with good pay, no matter the work. And most of the management has been in the military for extended times. Maybe its just the area or the fact I have worked in manufacturing and not retail. Dont know but just a thought I had!

Mr. Baldwin,
I would like to see you honor your pledge to move out of the United States after the Dems failed to gain the Presidency. I think instead of France (although you do have the same arrogant attitude) you should try a Middle Eastern country so you can be closer to your soulmates, the Islamic terrorists. Your pathetic sudden compassion for a soldiers plight reeks of your failing box office reciepts. Let me know if I can help you with the plane ticket.

The best part of this, probably, is that it proposes a "model."
Baldwin's celebrity increases the chance of expanded consciousness, including awareness of education as a fervently sought goal.

Ahhh! The former wife beater Baldwin must be having some pangs of conscience, so this is his "good deed", what a joke! The only thing I regret about old Alec is that he didn't keep his promise to vacate the USA permanently when Bush was elected, what a shame, but that's the way it is with these Hollywood pukes like Baldwin and Sean Penn the pugilist, they are so full of bull it's not even funny, and boy does it smell. Baldwin is a total jerk, and the only consciousness he's trying to expand is his blood alcohol level.

Only 1 in 20 recruits receives the maximum college benefit 57% of all recruits get no benefits at all, and 23% receive only half the benefits. The GI Bill benefits can not cover the costs of even the most inexpensive colleges, and the military attaches strings to these benefits making it difficult to collect the maximum benefit. For example, in order to qualify for the full amount, you are required to pay a $1200 deposit to the military, and if you leave the military early (as 1 in 3 do), get a less than honorable discharge (as 1 in 4 do), or decide later not to go to college, the military will keep your deposit and give you no benefits.

Recruits must score in the top half of military entrance exams and accept the jobs that no one else wants because of few skills that are transferable to the civilian job market. Finally, the benefits are paid in 36 monthly installments spread out over 4 years; 53% or veterans attend 2-year community colleges, so the military only pays half of the earned benefit. GI Bill benefits are usually given instead of, not in addition to, other forms of financial aid. The GI Bill was not made to send anyone to school. It was designed to recruit soldiers.

Personally I'm much more concerned that female soldiers can be expected to be beaten and raped by their own fellow American soldiers.
See the older thread, "Rape Fears Lead Female Soldiers to Suicide, Death."
Baldwin's token gesture is real nice and everything (the guy DID stand up to the Bush war machine when it was unpopular, big points for that) but we got real serious problems here.

Never heard of newsvine. Amidst their spelling errors I am left wondering. Baldwin has the money to send a buncha troops to college...I dont. If Baldwin is so moved why not start a scholarship or fund or something? Choosing 1 soldiers from nearly a quarter of a million is pretty ridiculous. Come on Baldwin I know people in less financial fortune than you that set up a scholarship. Though every bit counts so thanks for helping.
