  Ahh...he WAS in college. Stupid comment as part of an even dumber article. He was a nut. Period. It was not society's fault he gunned down 32 people in cold blood. Catch a frekin' clue.!

  How many people have we seen interviewed over the last 48hrs that said he would NEVER speak to anyone...no matter how many times they tried to reach out to him. This guy stalked women and was almost commited (obviously he should have been). To say we should feel sorry for this phsyco and blame society for his problems is just as insane as he was.

  Bottom line, SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST INSANE. He was OBVIOUSLY one of those people.

    You obviously misunderstood the comment. The point is, if Cho, like many others like him, had been sent to war, he would have gotten to kill as many as he liked and been called a hero for his efforts, despite the death of many innocents.

            And you are right, I never served in the military, I have only worked alongside them in Nicaragua (the war we never had) but I did train at Great Lakes with some real freaks.

            birddog,You stated that the author was "way out of line".I think that was also part of the point.American Society has a set of ideals that feels everyone ought to adhere to in order to prove that they are part of the Norm. A Norm that has such rigid sets of guidelines and to those that fail to meet those social demands is excluded.As for the military, one need only look back through recent history and see the atrocities committed.The reality is that,America does collective grieving well,yet,fails to see the whys of it all.We cry,hold a service and it receives front page news. Meanwhile all the other realities of our times are shunned. We can't go there because do not have the guts to face what it would take to address it and find a remedy. This by no means de-legitimizes the horrific deaths of those students killed.Still, Thousands have been killed,where no one mourns or even blinks an eye.Sad commentary of society as we continue pick and choose what and whom we grieve for.

            I hate to remind you of the Melai massacre, but Lt. Calley would beg to differ. I even have ex-soldier students who have returned from Iraq having worked as taxi drivers for death squads. But most of the killing today is quite sterile and faceless. They call them surgical strikes, I guess because they cause so much surgery of innocents.

              Those tragedies do happen but are quite rare and WE PROSECUTE the offenders when it can be proven.As far as the soldiers driving "death squads" around I call BS. Either someones feeding it to you or your spewing it BUT I'LL APOLOGIZE if you can post a legitimate link to proof of what your saying.

          What the hell is wrong with you? The Soldiers that are fighting to keep your butt free be they sane or insane are doing a job for the rest of us. Do you get the impact of what you said. This just has to be said and for those of you that don't like it OH WELL! Things like this could have been prevented. People who knew him also knew he was a danger to himself as well as others. When Colimbine happened, people also knew that the 2 boys were up to no good. 9/11 the goverment had an idea it was going to happen. Then when it does happen everyone acts so shocked about it. Why? Ya had an idea it was going to happen. Those insane soldiers as you call them are what keeps you free to sit in front of your computer and flex your freedom to say what you want. You better thank God everyday that we have a military full of heros willing to put their lives on the line for people like you to sit back and talk shi_ about.

            Thing is, it should have been prevented before he became a danger to himself or others. To prevent or at least lessen the amount of these incidents, our country needs to go through a major ideological shift. First of all, all parents need to educate themselves, not for your sake, but for your child's. Parents need to socialize with their kids. By all accounts, his parents were very quiet. They probably didn't speak much English when they came to the US. Teachers need to learn how to spot the lonely, quiet kids early and get them help before their condition evolves into something much worse. Most of them aren't anti-social. They just don't know how to socialize. I was one of them. Our speech programs need to be renovated. Instead of mocking them (and I'm not accusing you of this) which seems to be the norm (trust me it's true)at least among other children, these children need extra care.

      many soldiers are heros. People like you, who presume all soldiers are bad people are the worst kind of hypocrite...you love the freedom those soldiers provide you, while at the same time condeming them as horrible people.

        You, as well as many others here, are simply refusing to comprehend a very simple point the author has made. That is, the double-standards set by society. In one context - the 'civilised' world of law and order and the right to pursue happiness - someone such as Cho is psychotic. In another - the insane world of war and chaos, to kill or be killed - he would be a hero.

        You refute the paradox of this double-standard by saying, to some extent, that soldiers don't kill 'innocents.' It's true that Cho's 32 victims were innocent. But in Cho's paranoid mind, they were not. How does this differ from a nation that glorifies a culture of violence in cinema, video games and foreign battlefields?

        It could be argued that many of the victims of America's wars are also innocents. 2 million in Vietnam, 650,000 plus in Iraq, and so on. But in America's collective, national, paranoid mind, they are not. At best, it simply brushes them aside as 'collatoral damage,' its violence fully vindicated.

          What I find incomprehensible, as I'm sure many others around the world find looking on at this situation as I am, is how the topic of Gun Control has barely raised a whisper in the US. I find this staggering.

          You now have another 33 good reasons that justify Gun Control. Along with hundreds of others throughout the years. Ask yourself, would there be 33 dead if Cho had used, say, a butter knife?

          You're so proud of your right to bear arms even if some of you enjoying this "right" are not playing with the full deck of cards. In exercising this "right" coupled with your right to be "insane" it seems, the rights of others, many others, are terminated forever. That's what is called irrational.

          As long as you continue to celebrate this right, deify the gun and glorify violence as you do in your culture and wars, then you can expect that such things will continue again and again.

          But then again, 33 is a better than average day in Iraq.

            I SEE IT AS 32 REASONS NOT TO HAVE GUN CONTROL. IF SOME OF THE STUDENTS HAD GUNS MAYBE CHO WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KILL AS MANY. BUT SINCE GUNS ARE NOT ALOUD IN SCHOOLS (JUSTIFIED GUN CONTROL), CHO WAS GIVE THE PERFECT SETTING TO DO WHAT HE HAD IN MIND TO DO.

            VaTech had gun control laws in place...guns are not allowed on campus. Indeed, the laws of the state forbade Cho from purchasing a gun since he had formerlly been identified as mentally ill. The fact that the "paperwork" didn't make it into the system in a timely manner does not detract from the fact that a form of "gun control" was in place in both the state and the campus.

              That's because they not only have to be in force, they have to BE enforced! Unless the mindset in this country changes, yes, mass murders by gun as well as overall domestic violence by gun will only continue to grow in frequency. However, I do not expect this society to change its collective mindset on this matter. Peace and tranquility in a violent world is not possible when we cannot even agree on 1 issue.             Pol Pot killed atleast 1/5 of the Cambodian population. Do you know how he did it? I do he gun controlled them to death. When he took away all guns from average citizens they all became sitting ducks. He murdered babies ,forced young girls to marry men that they did not want to marry. He took small kids away from families and brainwashed them to the point where they were willing to get thier parents killed over something as small as the mom hiding a handfull of rice. (no one was supposed to have private food stocks the were supposed to be happy on one cup of rice and only rice a day). Hitler took peoples guns away as well. Infact most dictators have done the same.

            I am a proud owner of eight guns and have owned them for over a decade, and I have NEVER SHOT A PERSON. And unless someone tries to hurt a member of my family I never will.

            If you ever succeed in getting rid of guns will you try to outlaw cars next? After all they kill more people.

              After a serial shooting not dissimilar to this one Gun Control was introduced in Australia.

              Only those who require them, mainly farmers, go through rigorous and intensive screening procedures in order to have the right to own them.

              There hasn't been a serial shooting since. Nor has there been a Pol Pot or a Hitler (no matter what anyone thinks of Prime Minister John Howard).

              Your extreme and hysterical paranoia is a concern, especially when you're in possession of 8 guns.

              The primary purpose of cars is transportation.

          skeek: actually the many killed in Vietnam and Cambodia were mostly the result of leftists either in China, North Vietnam or the US DemLibs...and 3.5 million were executed after we left and millions more escaped as boat people.....same here in Iraq but all deaths can de directly put onto Saddam.... the US has not killed very many....most have been killed by other violent Iraqis or terrorist like al Queda....the people the DemLibs support nowadays...and even the Iraqis themselves say it is more like 45,000 killed and very few by us.....we have been extra careful to be PC and not have too many collateral damage deaths...too careful if you ask me...too PC...

            Bombing, invading, and torturing the powerless economic slaves of the dictator Saddam who neither attacked us directly nor made good on his threat to re-invade Kuwait, and fire more missiles at Israel* is not PC. PC is not going there in the first place. We bombed, we invaded, we tortured, how is that TOO PC?

            *Saddam backed down because President Clinton, a guy you probably also consider "too PC" threatened to nuke him if he did. It worked, and there were zero casualties!

        When I was in the Navy, back in the early 1960's, people in the military were no better nor no worse than anyone else, just average people, because back then, we had the draft, and every male had to go, whether you wanted to go or not, unless you got lucky and got 4Fed or got married and had a bunch of children. We still had some gung ho people, but most of them were just doing their time. Some of them decided they liked the military and became lifers.

      Yes, I agree with you.

      Cho was addicted to violent video games - just like the columbine killers. This is a pattern - not a coincidence, and yes, most of these "violent game addict" youth do join the military.

      I'm in art school and I see the pattern. High up military folks are visiting our 3d animation classes and encouraging us as students to make these games under the government's watch. Psychological/subliminal control inserts are especially encouraged. Have any of you seen these games? The government funds these classes!

        You cant blame video games and music for these actions, thats just an excuse. The kid was oviously disturbed, and probably would have done this any way. Theyre are millions of kids who play violent video games and listen to music that some people find "offensive" and "violent", but they dont go and shoot up schools. The games may have been a small factor, but the kid was suicidal and there were other signs that he wasnt mentally healthy. Maybe instead od spending millions of dollars on football stadiums, schools and colleges can wisely invest a few thosand dollars on metal detectors. If some one knows that a kid has a mental problem they should say something also. This can happen any where that doesnt have protection and signs are ignored.

          my comment is that anyone who enjoys watching violent videos and listening to offensive, irritating music has an inner turmoil that these things vent for them, which I believe if done repeatedly signifies a call for help or a bad sign that they will eventually act out to satisfy that need.But it has to be an obsession to the point of it triggering a certain behavior.

              hello

              there have been studies made regarding humans becoming insensitve to"causing pain and suffering" to others.

              In a particular study the subject was given control of a joy stick which controled an "electric charge" that would be received by another person.The study showed how the holders of the joy stick "sent" electric charges to the would be recipient even when the game indicaded tht the electric charge had reached dangerous levels.

              The ones sending the "electric charge" became insensitive to the probable pain they were cauisng the person on the receiving end.

              This study was done to investigate to what degree are regular people willing to inflict pain on others when they are in positions of power and have control over the fate of another person.

              This would explain Abu Graib where regular soldiers became part time torturers for fun and entertainment.

            My boys play violent video games and listen to offensive music and when ask if either the music or the video games made them want to go out and do hame to others they looked at me like I was the one who was crazy. They both said "mom it's just a game and it's just music" before the game or music gets the blame you better take a look at the person playing the game and listening to the music. Don't blame the game for the player being unbalanced.

        First off, y is that when something terrible happens, most ppl always turn it around and make it somehow bush's fault? Whether u like him or not, he's not behind what most ppl consider to be everything that goes wrong the world.

        Second, saying "violent" games, "evil" music, and horror movies are behind these kind of tragedies is nothing more than a scapegoat. I for one love all 3 of those things i previously mentioned. However, i have never once thought about imitating it. Believe it or not, ppl can think for themselves, and determine there own actions. I mean these games, movies, and music are sold by the millions. Yet, u don't see all these ppl going around shooting up schools. Violence has been around way before those things were even invented. In fact, the most infamous killers in history were WAY before these things were invented. Ppl need to stop blaming others for something one does wrong, and start taking responsibility for our own actions.

You should spread this information everywhere and anywhere you can. You have saved one boy. By sharing the above information it is possible to save others. I hope this sets your mind at ease a bit.

        I'm sorry I can't cite my source, but a couple weeks ago in my social psychology class we were given an article about a study regarding subliminal messaging. This research proved unequivocally that subliminal messages to have no effect and the increase of amount of popcorn bought in the previous studies (where subliminal messages were shown during a movie at a theater) were actually due to other variables. If I can find my handout I'll post the source later.

          That is such old news. And the only thing it did was boost pop corn sales. When I was young the thing was playing a record backwards to hear the devil worship message. Give me a break. If you want a good read on Subliminal messaging read the book:

          Night Chills by Dean R. Koontz

          It will give you a whole new respect for what subliminal messages could do. If that were the case I would think game makers would somehow enter a message to get more money form the players.

        Some people act under pressure; some people freeze up. We are all different in so many ways. No one has a lock on how they would react under such bizarre circumstances. I'm glad the carnage wasn't any worse than it was and that, mercifully, some of the victims have survived the ordeal.

      This is a very good point that you made, since he killed innocent people without a reason, everybody calls him mentally ill but there might be some reason behind the killing which we certainly don't know. George Bush and Blair and the gang doing the same ting in Iraq and the world around and for some of the American blow-hard these criminals are heroes. I don't see any difference between this ugly incident and the war on terror. America should invade the country from where this boy came because he killed 30 people, what's the difference, 9/11 killed 3000 people and here more than 30.

      Second many of our soiders are never shot anyone they are helping to build hospitals, schools, sewer systems for a people who have long gon without. They even rebuilt an ecosystem that Saddam destroyed on purpose because he didn't like the fishermen who needed it to survive.

      Yes we have some bad soiders but we also have bad people here too. But on the whole military men and woman are more resposible kind people then the average non-military person.

      I know I grew up around military people. 99% of them only kill when they have to for survival. Cho killed because he wanted to.

    Obviously he was a nut case. Being an alumni I feel for all the students and their families at VT. I took courses in Norris Hall and worked there as a lab tech in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Lab for a year. My girlfriend then / wife now, lived in AJ. I never met anyone at Tech like Cho, I find it hard to believe he could make it to Senior acting like that, but I guess anything is possible. I would be surprised if they don't find a brain tumor or some chemical imbalance that made him the way he was. Maybe someday they will be able to spot and treat someone like that, but it will be a long way off before they do. My only hope is policy will change so if a murder is committed on campus they lock down until the catch the guy.

      protoham ...my sentiments exactly! It sounds weird that even with all the abnormal behavior Cho had been exhibiting, that no one could see the storm clouds looming in the horizon. Now that the clouds burst, everyone is pointing around at everyone else saying they should've seen the rain coming.

        I wonder what kind of time frame there was between him changing from an extremely lonely, morbid kid, hurt kid to an extremely lonely, morbid, and angry kid who wanted murderous revenge. It's so difficult to know who will get through the torment in their life and who will succumb to it. I really don't see how anyone could have known that he would have turned to this, though those plays should have been a huge warning sign.

        I believe there is a breakdown in our mental health care system. IMHO, there are too many restrictions that prevent informed individuals from communicating to those who have a real "need to know", information about a potentially violent person like Cho. Additionally, the laws as they are written today, hamper the ability to take preventive steps to avoid these kinds of tragedies. I feel like those in authority were dealing with the situation with 1 arm tied behind their backs. When I was in college, there was a deranged man who kept showing up in the registrar's office cursing and making threats because he had not been admitted. One day, a group of us female staffers went to lunch together, and this man followed us and showed us a knife! We immediately ran to the nearest phone and called the police, but he was gone when they got there. But the kicker is, they said, well, there's nothing we can do by law anyway, he didn't really harm anyone. That was in 1970!

      A video on NBC (I think) said he complained about being made fun of for his South Korean accent and for being shy. He was kicked while he was down. As someone who had a speech problem when he was a kid I can vouch for the incredible hurt and loneliness, and futility of their own existence a child endures when they have such a socially crippling flaw. Other kids treated me like I was weird, when all I had was a speech problem. I went years afraid to talk, out of fear that someone would laugh at me, and consequently couldn't pursue romantic interests. A lot of kids already have trouble coping socially, without other complications like this. Luckily I could outthink my problems, and found outlets which allowed me to overcome most of the hurt I felt back then, and don't hold anyone to blame. There are lots of kids like this in every school. This killer is an exception and did an incredibly evil thing, but he didn't start out a killer.

        you are the first to make this point about our society's tolerance to bullying and hazing of kids of different race or physical traits. Teachers and counselors in schools must devote more efforts to identify those that are marginalized and alienated by their peers. You and many others live through it and move on with their adult lives. However, there are those that don't and they are the ones that eventually blow their top. Cho's manifesto is not as non-sensical as the media interprets it to be. His rantings are based on the humiliation he had to endure at the hands of those who were better off.

        I feel the pain in your comment. I'm glad you were able to find ways to cope and rise above the viciousness with which we humans often treat each other. Praise God, I have a sensitivity to people who were different in some fashion. When I was in elmentary school, a girl came to school smelling like urine sometimes, and she was ridiculed terribly. I was her only friend, not because I couldn't smell the odor, but I could see her pain and sadness,and I knew if she could help herself, she would have. Turned out her family was extremely poor, and she had to sleep with younger siblings who wet the bed. More often than not, their water was turned off. In high school, I befriended a girl with cerebral palsy who suffered terrible fits and was ostracized. What I'm saying is that a little kindness goes a long, long way. There may have been a time in Cho's life when he could've been reached.

          That's a virtuous thing you did. Those kids you befriended will always have your friendship to remember and remind themselves that not everyone is unsympathetic. Also, everyone needs good times to look back on when things get tough.

    One of the problems with responding to someone like you is original intent. You were meant to hit the toilet seat as an airburst. Unfortunatly, the splat found a viginia. The only insanity in this world is the rationalizations of idiots such as you who couldn't count his balls twice and come up with the same number. I'm a retired soldier and my son is a soldier. I won't speak for him but I find you to be an absolute ******.

    I fit Cho's profile did through all of school. They had my parents come to school in third grade because of my being a "loner". I have never hurt anyone and now run a dog sanctuary. On the other hand Ted Bundy was outgoing, very liked, well to do family, handsome, and killed a lot of people!!!

      Well, Cho also wrote dark & violent works in his creative writing class... so troubling were the works that students would refuse to "act out" or discuss his works. Cho was also thrown out of the creative writing class lead by the poet who gave that amazing closing statement... he was intimidating female students in the class and using his cell phone to take upskirt pictures of them... Cho's case was quite extreme.

        It is those things you mention is what made Cho a red flag, an ignored red flag. How the military could have prevented the VT rampage makes no sense. Cho would not have been fit for military duty.

          Cho wasn't "ignored." His teacher reported him to mental health, and many students tryed to reach out to him. He was extremely depressed, mentally ill, and simply not receptive to others who reached out to him.
