Why Do They Hate Us So Much? »

So why do billions of people around the world hate America so much? "Obviously", it's because of our freedom, our prosperity, and our democracy. How do I know? Because George Bush told me so. What other reason could foreigners have for resenting America?

they hate us because we meddle in their affairs, base our military in over 120 countries around the world, stage coups, back assassinations, prop up dictators with billions and billions in 'foreign aid' ...and much much more.

I have been outside the country. I went to portugal. I by looks am definitely american. However when I approach them speaking portugese and knowing of their customs they tell you things they might not say to others. Here's the deal. A lot are jealous of our wealth and status. They look to america like it's this great land but frown on reccent policies of warfare. They dont understand the Iraq deal, the knowledge (where I was) was limited about it. Most said they would give life in america a try. A few said they were happy in portugal and thats fine too. however I only met one man who said he hated america. That's a glimpse I had in another country. Im not being an ****** but have you ever left US soil to mingle with other countries reccently?

I have lived over 20 years outside the United States. In your comments showed part of the problem. People do not like it when someone comes in an arrogantly tells them that they should do things the American way. If you try to talk to them in the their language and try doing things their way, most people will love you. No one wants an arrogant insolent guest.

Ignoring the obvious visits regularly to Mexico and Canada, Yes I have been out of the country recently.
Last summer we were in Greece, Italy, Turkey and Croatia. We are obviously americans from the way we dress and the way we talk.
We also saw no indications of hatred in any of those countries. Of course we do attempt to act respectful both of the people and their customs when we travel overseas. One thing we don't want to be seen as is the 'Ugly American' of the 50's who always wanted everything in every country to replicate what we have here at home.
Some people bring this on themselves and us by their behaviour and expectations. Something like a trip I made to mainland China about 20 years ago. Many in our group insisted on 'American' style breakfast daily and would never even try chopsticks or the native foods. Those kind of actions give all americans a bad name.

Jealous?! What a misguided crock.
We are perceived as bloated pigs overindulging on our mediocraty provided by military might.
Nearly everything is cheap (comparitively) in this country. So what do we do? We drive cars we dont need, we over-eat, build homes 4 times the size what we need and consume massive amounts of energy to heat and cool them. We are perceived as gluttons across the world and it is, for the most part true.
Why would anyone be jealous of that?

Why do they hate us so much? WHY DO I CARE! Do you think someone from China cares what we think about them? do you think someone from Korea or Japan cares what we think of them? and don;t even bring up the middle east! Don't belive me, ask a few people from other countries and you will be surprised at the response! America should care about AMERICA! I feel sorry for you people that hate your own country.

You are dead on Pop! People hate poor sports and we have become the epitome of poor sportsmanship. We celebrate a tackle in the NFL or college as if it were the heavyweight title. We have gangster NBA stars who attack idiot fans and worst of all we are even mean as hell to each other on the street every day.
This is a no brainier really. Rearrange the world not for the American people but for our leaders and their cronies and lord it over everyone for decades, sell weapons one week and try to take them back the next. What do we expect?
I feel so much for the poor bastards laying at Arlington and elsewhere who really gave everything so we could buy more at Walmart. We need to reign in these demigods in Washington and on Wall Street afore they sell everything to finance another home in the Hamptons.

Hmmmmmmmmm,it wouldn't be our abridging of the electorial rights, interfering in other countries internal affiars, hypocracy regarding supporting terrorism, unfair farm subsides and raping them of their natural resources for our corporate gain.
Just a thought

this isn't about Bush, or Clinton, or any party. This is about America's foreign policy of meddling and "intervention" over the last 50-60 years.
When you meddle in people's affairs, you're going to engender hatred. it's a pretty simple equation.

What you call meddling, is actually us trying to keep the oil flowing into our country......Yes that is a true statement only it is done with a gun,Gimme,Gimme,Gimme and if that don't work take. There is an old saying "be careful of the toes you step on today as they may be connected to the a$$ you have to kiss tomorrow"You need to become self sufficient and you have all the resourses you need to do so.There are two USA's the people who are not realy hated;and the Gov which is.It is a problem that only USA can solve but a problem that affects the world

That's a lame ass excuse for being too damn lazy to develop alternative fuels and if that's you're attitude towards the situation, then we're getting what we deserve. It's not our oil to begin with, its theirs. We support to government because we're raping the people of true oil profits that they could be getting. Hell, we all know that oil is worth more than $57 dollars a barrel.
Okay genius, what would happen if all the major oil producing nations denominated all their oil in Euros. Would we invade them all?
Reply -

0gramstransfat1 year, 3 months ago
I wonder what the U.S. will do when the oil runs out? Oil production in the U.S. has already peaked... oil production in other nations is going to peak soon as well. America needs to quit exploiting the people and resources of other countries with its "trade agreements" and make some lasting relationships that truly benenfit both parties, not just the
American interest.

Great point. We are dependant on this commodity for our very exsistence. There are a lot of bitchers and complainers on here but I shudder at the idea of the flow coming to a grinding halt. Just the recent price spikes ought to give all of us a wake up call.
Another point is the fact that Americans over the past 100 years have "mastered" the art of turning this substance along with our ingenuity and other natural resources to achieve the highest standards of living in the world.
So bitch and complain if you will but when the well runs dry...oh yeah, you'll be knashing your teeth!

No, not since the current idiot in the white house. It's be steadily building through the 20th century. Look at history. Brutal suppression of phillipinos during the occupation there, overthrowing Mohammed Mossadegh 1953(putting back the shah who wasn't too happy with the Iranin people for overthrowing him) killing Salvador Allende, Patrice Lumumba, supporting corrupt governments in the developing world and the list goes on

True...this is why they(America) wants to get rid of Chavez. He sees America literally steeling resources from countries and this is one of the main reasons why they went to Iraq... oil!!!!!!!!! Plus it suits their middle east agenda and that of Israel.
Reply-

AbuAmirah1 year, 3 months ago
I wouldn't say they went for oil alone. One of the reason why we invaded Iraq, supported the coup against Chavez in 2002 and are threatening Iran is because all three are trying the chang the status quo in how oil is sold and in which currency. All three wanted to move their oil sales to Euros. In fact, Sadaam did and the 1st that America did after the initial invasion was to change their oil sales back to dollars. Iran is part of the axis of evil because they to create a new way to rate oil, called the Iranian bourse index, which will be demoninated in Euros.

History has shown that every world power or empire has dominated weaker nations to their detriment. No government has ever ruled for the sole benefit of its citizens. History shows that rulers are concerned only in pacifying the masses so that they can maintain their power. Look at the revolutions that have taken place. Which one has really established a just system where all of its citizens are treated justly and fairly? They have only succeeded in replacing one form of oppression with another.

Well think about this for a second, if we turned on our T.V and saw news about lets say.... Italy for example, and we saw citizens protesting, news anchors bad mouthing there own country, and thats all we saw... Well it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that we would ALL sit back and say WOW ITALY IS TERRIBLE!!! Point is I blame the media , when thats all the Europeans see, do you blame them.. When was the last time you saw any news channel aside from FOX news say anything good about the United States!!! Let me know and I will correct myself...

That is why I think TV is crap. You gave a good example. How do you know for a fact that ALL view what's on the TV the same way?

Europeans and other countries have their own news channels. In reality, news is a country or political parties propaganda. When you live outside the US, you see how biased the news is in the US. I seriously doubt that most Europeans watch US news. I know most Asians don't.

Actually, I'd be a lot more worried if the Italian reporters said that nothing bad is going on in Italy and that everything is wonderful.
Or if there were protests and they didn't show them on TV, which happens quite often in US, as well as in repressive countries like let's say Russia.
If you think that country where press can't criticize its leadership or the policies of its government is a good place to live, then you really missed out on Soviet Union. You would have loved it there. Though, not to worry there are still states with repressive regimes that don't allow for public criticism of the government, you might consider living in Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan, if you are in that type of thing.

After visiting 50 countries on six continents, I conclude that people around the world LOVE Americans. I trust my own observations over the bullcrap I'm fed by TV/govt.
In contrast, people around the world universally find the US govt an appalling and grotesque misrepresentation of its wonderful people. Our own govt discourages travel because they don't want you to figure this out. Our own govt wants us to be fearful of the "evil brown people who want to blow us up." Don't be punked.
At the face-to-face grass-roots level, 99,9% of all people I've met are kind, respectful and sympathetic with American citizens. Go see for yourself.

They don't hate us. Sorry to disappoint anybody eager to pick a fight. They really like us as individuals. Even the French. I walked my elderly father across the busiest intersection in Paris during rush hour, and I didn't hear one impatient horn beep for the 60 seconds it took to cross. Would that happen in NYC? Foreigners distrust the US govt - not its amazing people.
TV's propagandistic narrative is skewed to make you feel paranoid about people from other countries. Have they successfully fooled you - or do you trust your own observations?

Actually, I think whether someone is going to like you are not depends on your comportment. I have never had people hate me because I am an American when I have traveled outside the US. However, having lived abroad, I have seen people despise some American tourists. Generally, it was because of their arrogance. Another common fault is the American tendency to complain about everything. In some cultures it is rude to complain when you are guest and when you travel to another country, you are guest of that country.

Well if your people were such great people they would never allow the government you have in place exist. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Your country is only as good as the people running it.
The only true way to find out what other countries REALLY think about Americans is to actually be from another country. It's easy to like an individual, hell I have American friends, but as a country America is a cesspool of criminal triumph and the dominance of greed. Sorry, but you are the unthinking, adolescent bully of the globe that everyone wishes would just grow up.

The world has not been fond of America for at least since World War II. Latin America has had a beef with US since the Monroe doctrine of the 1800s (I forget the exact decade). Smaller countries have tolerated America because they have no choice. However, no one really loved the Roman or British Empire either.

It's not "we the people" per se' .
It's corporate interest, it's pac money, payoffs, greed, misrepresentation. It's the dishonest, the power hungry, in any group, in both parties, that ruin it for everyone. In general, most American's have little influence to control the Bush's, the Kennedy's, Johson's, Kissinger's etc.
It takes civil disobedience, activism, and organisation to even have the smallest impact on the internal workings of govt' - any gov't.
It doens't mean it's not worth trying either. People have to be peacefully engaged in their own political process, regardless of the country the live in.
Anyone who hates Americans, hates themselves. We're all the same. We're all trying to make better lives for ourselves, without negatively impacting those around us. At least the majority of the Americans I know.

I have always found that alot of the people who hate us will suddenly change thier mind when you flash a visa under there nose. Then they'll "rent" their mother out to you just to be your friend.
It's mostly that people don't like the guy at the top. People like to root for the underdogs. And then you have people like AbuAmirah and Populists, who need someone or thing to hate and blind themselfs to facts so they can hold on to thier venom. They cannot enjoy the simple plesure in life. They need create false illusions so they pump up thier low self esteem while trying to convince people and themselves that they and only they know the answers to all the problems in life and the world. And who and why all these things occur. So in their mind it gives them self worth. It's sad really. To watch (read) people wallow in their self induced pool of hate and envy.

You wouldn't have a career as a therapist. First off, i have high self esteem and the only things that i hate are UCLA Bruins, Notre Dame fighting irish, american myopia and hypocracy. I enjoy alot of pleasures, one of which is geopolitics. I not saying I'm freakin Nostradamus, but i do have ideas and some of them might not jive with most people on this thread. Am I pro-militant no, am I pro-Muslim yes and i am not afraid to admit it. I have a pretty good life, but i work my ASS off for it I don't envy anyone, except Warren Buffet and Brad Pit(if you're smart enough, you'll know why.
All i'm saying is we need to stay out of other people's issues and problems. Develop our own reusable fuel sources and let the world handle its own problems for a change

We must be doing something right then. We Americans must learn to expect, not lament, your hostility, and begin to worry that things would be indeed wrong if such unelected dictators praised the United States.
When Europe orders all American troops out; when China cites unfair trade with the United States; when South Korea says get the hell off our DMZ; when India complains that we are dumping outsourced jobs on them; when Egypt, Jordan, and the Palestinians refuse cash aid; when Canada complains that we are not carrying our weight in collective North American defense; when the United Nations moves to Damascus; when the Arab Street seethes that we are pushing theocrats and autocrats down its throat; when Mexico builds a fence to keep us out; when Latin America proclaims a boycott of the Major Leagues; and when the world ignores American books, films, and popular culture, then perhaps we should be worried. But something tells me none of that is going to happen in this lifetime.
