The deteriorated security situation in the capital has given rise to an increasing number of checkpoints in the city, which, ironically, have become dangerous in themselves.

The American public for the most part is desensitized to Iraqi death. They consider all Iraqi's that don't conform to their western values as "terrorists". When you look at it that way, the deaths of Iraqi men, women, and children bear no more significance than that of a housefly. Or as Anne Coulter put it,"cockroaches".

Unfortunately, you are correct.
Outside of the Americans that actually have family and/or friends in the active military that are IN Iraq or Afghanistan, most Americans pay little to NO attention to the death and destruction that continues unabated in both countries. They have no idea how badly the Bush administration has screwed up both countries and the millions of people living (or used to live) there.
They are too worried about whether or not Paris Hilton stays in jail. That sort of ridiculous crap is more important than millions of innocent people that have been slaughtered over the last 4 years in some distant countries way far away from them.
