The US is among a tiny minority of countries (Somalia is another) that have refused to sign up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child that expressly forbids the practice. According to Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, only three other countries - Israel, South Africa and Tanzania - mete out the sentence and they have collectively just 12 prisoners serving it.

Honestly, I find this very shocking. I can't believe that the State of Michigan will sentence 14 year old to life without parole.

We have more children in prison than all other countries combined. But, if they weren't prepared to spend the rest of their lives in jail, they should not have committed such heinous, horrible acts.

        You reap what you sow.

Mistakes are fine. But they can also kill and ignorance of the law does not negate guilt.

What about the role of fully comprehending your actions- teenagers have been shown to neurologically display more risk taking behaviour, less emotional control ., etc.. etc.. at 14 the child should at least be given the chance for parole.
