I've said it before and will say it again... and again...

Higher (and even stable) living standards require industrial economies. Industrial economies require industrial sources of energy (windmills, photovoltaics, renewables and conservation while helpful, are not sufficient). Industrial sources of energy are available today in 2 broad categories, carbon-based and nuclear fission.

Is there a way out of the environmental limitations vs living standards catch-22? Sir James Lovelock, environmentalist and the originator of the Gaia Hypothesis suggests there is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/5141142.stm

Best wishes Mr. Gore and Rainforest Action Network. We await your proposals for, and initiative actions to develop, alternatives to carbon-based energy that will concurrently maintain our standard of living.

Oh well. France's President Sarkozy announced a couple of days ago that private traffic would be reduced, NO new roads would be built, No new nuclear plants were needed, renewables and other sources were sufficient for the immediate future and long term it should be possible to phase out nuclear plants ....
