Has anyone heard Darfur mentioned in the presidential debates? Or in Congress? The death toll is now more than 450,000 and counting. What can be done before the world learns and then quickly forgets, as it has already done with the Rwandan genocide? Why is mainstream media silent about this holocaust?

If we wait for our mainstream media to expose this horrific truth, it will be too late. Remember; G.E has more to lose by exposing China's exploitation of Darfur for its oil.

China owns oil fields in and around Darfur, buys 70 percent of Sudan's oil...

Analysts point to three main reasons for China's continued unwillingness to cooperate with international efforts in the restive western Darfur region. The rising Asian economic superpower has significant business interests in Sudan having invested an estimated $10 billion in Sudan since the 1960s, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. The country of 1.3 billion people also has a growing thirst for oil and Sudan provides up to 10 percent of that oil, making China Sudan's largest trade partner. And on the political front, analysts point to China's longstanding policy of refusing to meddle in the affairs of other governments for fear its own practices could be scrutinized.

I thought you were being sarcastic Rfe. Good book-'What Is The What' Dave Eggers. Read it last year and found out about China and the oil in Sudan. Not to mention the boy soldiers.

China's state-owned China National Petroleum Corp. is the largest foreign investor in Sudan's oil sector, according to Brookings Institution China Energy Fellow Erica Downs. The country's Greater Nile Petroleum Operation Co. is the largest overseas project for any Chinese firm in terms of production.

Bashir's main arms supplier is China!

The major owners and advertising sponsors of mainstream media are among the same corporations that have huge investments in China.

Do you really think Coke Cola Corporation wants to be linked to the mass murdering of thousands of people in Darfur?

Coke is also another sponsor of the upcoming Summer Olympic Games to be held in Beijing.

Blaming the mainstream US media for the lack of international action on Darfur is bizarre.

The member nations of the UN are well aware of what is happening in Darfur - yet the UN does nothing.

A little more research and you'll understand the issue better:

General Electric has invested millions of dollars in the upcoming Summer Olympics to be held in Beijing. They, as Coke Cola Corp, and Johnson & Johnson do not want the public to exert pressure on China.

The UN is certainly one part of the problem... but without the news media reflecting the gravity of this horrific situation, the world will remain silent and complicit.

"Blaming the mainstream US media for the lack of international action on Darfur is bizarre."

The mainstream US media is not being blamed for lack of international action, but for not keeping this in the public eye. It's a valid assessment.

But it does call their morals into question, doesn't it?

"Why is mainstream media silent about this holocaust?"

Why indeed? The media is supposed to be controlled by liberals. And we all know how liberals get their panties all twisted whenever the victim belongs to certain minority groups. So why aren't they all up in arms about this? Why haven't the Democratic candidates said anything?

That Republicans haven't said anything is despicable, but given that liberals regularly characterize us as "racist", perhaps we're just living down to their expectations.

As to the Dems...well, we can see the truth about them now, can't we? Talk the talk, but walk the walk?

As to the reasons why, if it has nothing to do with the race of the victim, perhaps it has to do with the oppressor?

Right - there is a shadowy, American progressive/arab conspiracy to dominate the world.

Really, Cherev is every bit as tiresome as the Aryan Nations types that rant about the Vast Jewish Conspiracy and the Zionist Occupied Government.

The tragedy in Darfur is beyond comprehension.

After understanding the motives behind this horrific human tragedy, help support a boycot of Coke Cola products, JOhnson & JOhnson and G.E.

Let them get our message, that they share a moral responsibility to confront China and to bring pressure to help stop the rape, plundering, and killing. They are investors with and supporters of China's injustices against humanity.

What are we allowing our country to become?

Did it happen to you that it's neither the Chinese nor the US corporations who raped and murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Darfur. It's the Arab Muslims.

If anything the US and the rest of the world (including the Chinese) must CONFRONT THE MURDERERS.

Hitting the corporations that do business with China will do nothing. If you truly want to make China sit up and take notice, it's time to do something we need to do anyway. Boycott all Chinese made products. Period. That, and only that, will get their attention.

By the way, when we buy Chinese products we are financing the arming of the Sudanese government, both from oil revenue and from the some $1 billion in military aid the Sudanese have received from the Chinese government. It's the same damn thing as the 'war on terror'. We send money to the oil rich nations and they send money to the terrorists. We're funding BOTH SIDES of these wars. When will the West wake up?

The U.S. makes money from both ends, our allies and our enemies. The sad part is that the corporations care nothing about those that are maimed or killed in the process.

I'm afraid that this is not possible... unless, of course, you'll convince the US population to start living in caves. You see, almost everything Americans purchase today is made in China, from apple juice to American flags.

After reading & commenting on most posts, I concur with most-something needs to be done. Boycott-no. My opinion, is for every American, when they pick up merchandise, they want-think about the 10-11 year old children making it, then, the lead paint, that so far, is still a problem, then, in the first place-outsourcing thousands of American workers jobs, for corporate greed & their stocholders. If we should boycott anyone, it should be w/mart, Etc., who sell these deficient products. America, is soon to be in a very bad slump, & not the nation we used to be-think about it---------

What amazes me is that the countries with power allow these atrocities to persist. It makes it very obvious that corporate and political agendas come into play when nothing is done to even mediate negotiations between these factions.

I guess when you're encapsulated away from the atrocities that have happened and are happening it is easier to detach from reality.

The U.S. may not be able to police the whole world, but we can surely make a statement as to what is acceptable and unacceptable in the world arena through international trade, financial aid, and allied pressures.
