Back in the day, people had more reverance for their president and their buffonish statements were not often repeated.
I think Carter's greatest quote was "Malaise Forever".
One of Reagan's greatest quotes was about democrats: "If it moves tax it, if it keeps moving regulate it, if it stops moving subsidize it."

Yeah, he also said-
"Because Vietnam was not a declared war, the veterans are not even eligible for the G. I. Bill of Rights with respect to education or anything."
--Ronald Reagan, in Newsweek, April 21, 1980.

Thanks for sharing, reminds me of a David Letterman segment about US President's speeches. Of course, the dumbest one has to be from the dumbest one. Must be the times?

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."
Dwight David Eisenhower (1953â;;1961)
and
"If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy."
James Madison (1809â;;1817)
So prophetic.

Andrew Jackson's farewell address was also surprising. And so insightful.

My favorite is, "We Americans have no commission from God to police the world". Benjamin Harrison. John Hagee, Pat Robertson, George W. Bush et al. should have been good enough citizens to have heeded that.

All obstructions to the execution of the laws, all combinations and associations, under whatever plausible character, with the real design to direct, control, counteract, or awe the regular deliberation and action of the constituted authorities, are destructive of this fundamental principle, and of fatal tendency. They serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public administration the mirror of the ill-concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common counsels and modified by mutual interests.
Washington's Farewll Address - 1798
