A Marine wanted in the brutal slaying of a pregnant colleague who had accused him of rape was arrested Thursday night in Mexico after a three-month international manhunt, authorities said.

FBI agents and Mexican authorities arrested Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean around 7 p.m. EDT. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, whose burned remains were found in January in the back yard of his home near Camp Lejeune.
"You know my name. You know who I am," Laurean told The Associated Press while being held at the Michoacan state Attorney General's Office in Morelia, the state capital.
Asked if he wanted to say anything, Laurean simply said "Proof," but wouldn't explain.
Laurean appeared slightly disoriented. Asked what he would do next, he replied, "do I have a choice?...I don't know."
What a monster!

If anyone here in webville knows the mind-set of a marine, forgive what I am going to post. My own father was a 19-year Gunnery Sargent (Gunny) with blood-stripes. There was not an island or atoll in the Pacific Theater he didn't visit -- including two-tours in Japan. Once when he was really angry/drunk, he said simply to me, "I brought you into this life, and I can return you postage-due with my little-finger..." He was beating my mother when I stepped in, asking him to stop.
Even at 15, I had no doubt he could. In my eyes, bet your sweet ass I knew what those poor Japanese felt when they got eye-ball to eye-ball with "Woody."
Tell ya' a little secret, I later jumped with Marines I can say without hesitation: If I were in a fire-fight, I'd want his nasty-ass on my flank!!

      Well I'd rather see him shot or hung (no lethal injections, it'd be too nice for him). I don't want my tax dollars going to keep him in prison for the rest of his life. But Mexico will not extradite him if the death penalty is on the table.

        Mr. Psycho, of course I'll wait for the trial and if found guilty he'll see the inside of a prison for a long time. I only wish we could eliminate this type of individual from my tax dollar support. But as an American I can say and judge who I want. I am not in any position to carry out my wishes so it is moot.         Thats why we have dads. LOL. We get to protect our daughters. When someone else fails and it doesn't happen as in this case I would want to sit on the jury and hear the case.
        If guilty they would not want to do what I would recommend.
        It's called a snake pit. Put the bastard in there with venomnous snakes that have had their fangs removed and let him be scared to death. Do this every day until he is used to the snakes being harmless then leave the fangs in.
        It's called terror just what he did to that poor woman.
        Save him and put thim thru this daily for the rest of his worthless miserable life. He'll end it himself.

    Weel there might be a way around it. If the State of North Carolina promises not to excute him. Then bring him back and have the USMC charge hime under the UCMJ and then have the military execute him. SHHHH!!! But lets not tell the Mexican about that trick.

    Wow, it's truly amazing how much you have to learn. The murder occurred in North Carolina. It's where the crime occurred that determines jurisdiction and and where prosecution occurs. And, it appears to be under military jurisdiction.
    The death penalty is a viable option. Did you think Mexican courts were going to decide this? I'm pretty sure Mexican officials will have no problem turning him over to U.S. authorities, especially since the FBI already is involved.

      If I remember right, the North Carolina Attorney General came out and basically said he was forced to take the death penalty off the table if there was any hope of Mexico extraditing Laurean. So unfortunately, this "man" will not be executed for his crimes.
      Also, I'm very curious to know how Laurean's wife plays into all this. She has kept a very low profile, I don't even remember seeing her on TV. I just have a feeling she has more involvement than we know. Or maybe she was just ashamed to be married to such a dirtbag.

      The Mexican courts have in effect decided hundreds, if not thousands, of cases, using Mexico's policy of not extraditing those facing the death penalty.

    I'd have to agree with Scrimshaw, no one on this tread has talked about race, only the fact most of us believe he is guilty and would like to see him executed instead of being a burden to society. Of course he's presumed to be innocent until proven guilty by the judicial system, but I'm not part of that system and have no power to do anything but voice an opinion.

I found some of the things that Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbachr's stepmother said and didn't do a little strange and not too helpful at the very beginning. Seems she was trying to blame her step daughter more than trying to find out what had happened.

        II Subsequent Mexican Court Decisions
        On October 2, 2001, the Supreme Court of Mexico ruled in a binding decision that no extradition would be granted unless the requesting state gives assurances that a term of years would be imposed and the suspect would be eligible for parole. In so ruling, the Court held that the purpose of punishment is rehabilitation. Life imprisonment is inconsistent with rehabilitation and, therefore, a sentence of life imprisonment violates their constitution because it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

        In May of 2002, in a non-binding decision, a Mexican court ruled that assurances by a prosecutor have "no value because U.S. judges are autonomous, as their own embassy recognizes, so they would apply the punishments established by U.S. Penal Codes". The Office of International Affairs has advised that they interpret these rulings as requiring that the assurances to be given by a judge. Such "judicial assurances" are a legal impossibility in the United States since a judge cannot rule on a case not before the court, and a judge may not prejudge the evidence.

        In at least two recent cases, Mexican authorities have refused to deport or expel a US citizen without sufficient assurances.
        The October 2, 2001 Mexican Supreme Court decision and its holdings were reaffirmed by the Mexican Supreme Court in April, 2004.
        These Mexican Supreme Court rulings took place during G.W.Bush's admin! Why was there nothing he could do about it, since the original Treaty was an agreement with the Carter admin, yet changed with binding and non-binding decisions during the Bush admin??
