Do No Evil – In an article at World Net Daily posted only two days ago you can read some shocking news: FBI investigates the Wikimedia foundation as a result of reports about the presence of questionable material (with serious, explicit sexual content) present on Wikipedia.
Basically here's my idea we can solve this by doing a simple one-word action: NOTHING. Say it with me now n-o-t-h-i-n-g. You can't censor wikipedia just because it's becoming a bad role model, and besides there are worse things than porn that can happen to your kids. At MOST a content filter might be appropriate, but I highly disagree with the sensationalist nature of this article. I think the person who wrote it was pulling a bit of a Maude Flanders, albeit with a little more sense and less zionist, but I still detect it there in the diction, which was as mentioned already, sensationalist.
I don't think that parents should block kids and I also feel that removing all pictures that people feel offensive is not right either.
I am not saying that pornography is right but with what is shown on television and in movies today Wikipeadia is the least of our worries, and for those kids who are looking for porn I doubt that this will be their first choice.
There are many things in life which can shock children and some of them happen right in peoples homes and in school or on the street, our job as parents is to prepare them for this or explain it to them if they witness something that shocks them.
PsychoHosebeast- Yep I have five of them, there are four boys and one girl and range in age from 16 thru to 28. We never really worried about porn, it was a subject that we discussed with our children as the need arose, with the boys it wasn't a big problem but when our daughter came home from babysitting once and said about 14 year old boys watching porn the explaining got a little difficult. Mom did a pretty good job explaining it to her. Being on a farm kids are exposed to acts of sex between animals at an early age and I think that by even 8 years old all of our children understood what sex was.
One thing is to understand what sex is and a completely other is to expose kids to pornography. Some of the images at the Wikipedia, which is general content rated, should be X-rated and treated as such, but they are not. Most of them I suppose are submitted by the same person, as they look like treating the same topic (gay-porn). They are hardcore images, not just "erotica" - you should really go check them out. I bet you will not want your children exposed to such images, even at the age of 14!
Nobody is going to wikipedia to get their porn fix. The whole internet already exists for that. Your kids know more about porn than you do. You can't make it go away, you can teach your kids how to get out of bad situations and be aware of their surroundings. They will be adults before you know it, and they have to start living in the real world some time.
