As usual, the story doesn't provide enough information about what happened. Saying that the shotgun and illicit drugs were "discovered" doesn't tell me much. Were they locked in the car trunk? What were the illicit drugs? Marijuana, which in California is allowed for medicinal purposes, or something inexplicale like heroin. In short, there may be very little wrong with this teacher or there could be somehting very wrong. We just don't have enough information on which to make a decision.

I'm married to a teacher and NO, they don't get paid well. In fact, garbagemen get paid better. Not manager/supervisor garbagemen, just regular old garbagemen. It sickens me that my husband has to have a four-year degree, another year of credential classes and certification, and yet another year on top of that for more certification crap... all to get paid beans in comparison to a job you barely even need to graduate high school for! And with the responsibilities placed on teachers nowadays... people expect them to be replacement parents to their children!
I'm sorry but teachers DON'T get paid well at all... not generally speaking, and DEFINITELY not in regards to the work they do.

If he's selling them illegally, it's still a crime even if the drugs themselves are legal. Plus he had the shotgun on school property, which when I grew up was normal during deer hunting season. But, times do change.

He was teaching his class all about free enterprise and the 2nd amendment. He can now teach about the state's penal system.

Ok and who the hell gave the cops the tip off? Should'nt they have been arrested for being in posession of drugs? Bringing a gun onto school property is wrong and dangerous. They should be kept in your home, out of sight, out of mind and only easily accesible for the owner. Loaded or not he shouldn't have had that gun in his posession.
For the comment on a teacher's salary, I'm enrolled in school for teacher aide. Average pay in LA is $10-20/hr! Teachers get double! It just doesn't seem like alot when you have kids and a mortgage.

Okay. So the teacher gave permission to have his car searched when he knew he had drugs and a gun in the car? He uses a shotgun, not something less obvious, and then doesn't load it? Anonymous tip? I think something smells in L.A. and not the smog. If the teacher really was that stupid he shouldn't be teaching anyway. But sounds like a frame job by a student that probably is dealing or was extorting the teacher. "Pass me or I'll f-up your life." Just a possibility.

Students attend school for 180 days. Teachers work more than that. In addition to teaching classes, we must be on committees, sponsor organizations, and attend extra-curricular activities. I do not have ten weeks off during the summer. There are meetings to attend, classes to complete, and preparations for the next year. As for my pay, it is around 30, 000. That is with a Master's degree and my extra 200 for coaching. Of that 30, 000 a year this year, I have paid out 4,236.76 for classroom expenses. (I have my receipts to prove this.) This sum does not include the classes I will take this summer to keep my certification that I must pay for. When you arrive at work at 6:30 in the morning and get home between 9 and 10 at night (with at least 3 more hours of work to do), haven't eaten lunch yet, and haven't gone to the bathroom since you left your house that morning, then you can make asinine comments about teaching not being a full time job.

Well if you would read the story it says that a student at the school called the cops & said that he had bought drugs from the teacher earlier in the day and that he saw a gun in the teacher's car. That by itself is probable cause to search, but the teacher gave the cops permission to search his car. As for teacher's pay. . Teachers by me make on average $46,000 a year & have the summer's off. Much more than garbage men here & they work all year long.

He absolutely should be fired. Any one knows that you can not bring a firearm onto school property, you cna not bring narcotics onto school property and it is very big breach of the law to have both narcotics and firearms together. That is a huge felony. Being in posession of narcotics is bad enough but with a firearm? I don't know where this teachers brain is at. Does he think he's above the law? If it was a student they would be expelled from school and not be able to reregister at another one period.

I am a teacher and feel that people do not understand the work that most teachers put into a school year. Our work does not end when we leave school. There are many nights that I work 5-6 hours at home or more after staying an hour after school and an hour before school. People should respect the work that teachers do in supporting and nurturing their children. Having the summer off keeps teachers sane and able to do their best. The pay is not anywhere comparable to what teachers make, but I do not teach for the money. I do enjoy my job and hope that continues throughout the years, but part of that does require respect and support from the public... One person does not represent the entire teaching force...

Having some inside info, Katchem13 is pretty "right on".
He looks beyond the front page story. I just hope
they print the retraction on the front page of the newspaper!

Has anyone heard about the Port St. Lucie KINDERGARTEN teacher who had a survival vote in her classroom where the highly functional autistic child was voted ouT? THEN THE TEACHER allowed and had all the children to say why they did not like this child..... the school board said no abuse occured..... well I am a teacher of PRE-K. If this had been a gay or black situation the sh...t would have hit the fan THEN for sure..... just today I was discussing with my kids about how we are different but special.. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THE WORLD?? This homo stuff is getting out of hand when they would receive more attention than a 5yr old special needs child.

I am a teacher. To the person spouting off about getting a full time job, I work more hours than you do in a year. I average about 60 hours a week. There is no overtime pay for this work. 50 weeks and 40 a week equals 2000 hours. 40 weeks ( 10 months is what we get paid for) and 60 hours a week makes 2400 hours. I work more in less time for less money. I don't get paid for my summers and the average doesn't mean beans to to me. I make 31,000 a year teaching where I'm needed. I guess I could follow the money but who would teach my students? I think the guy should be fired, but people need to stop dumping on teachers. Good ones put in more hours and spend our own salary to reach our students. I'd like to see another professional rountinely spend his/her money for their job. Do you know any? And I'm a governmental employee...please! I don't see Congresspeople who can afford it spending their money to get the job done, they'd rather spend yours, and they make a crapload more than me.

AMEN Imaggod........ there aren't any and there never will be because they do not love..... Why IF IT WEREN'T FOR A TEACHER THERE WOULD BE NO LAWYERS, DOCTORS.... ETC.... HELLO! We teachers put up with alot and work alot of hours and our hands are tied when it comes to discipline of these children that we have more hours in the day than their own parents!!! stop bashing us

AS to this teacher... i dont know... the drugs thing is very bad....as to the gun.. well, if the gun was sitting on his front seat then that is a problem but it was unloaded and maybe he is a hunter... we dont know. BUT if the gun was in his trunk or hidden under the seat in a locked car, then I dont see a problem at all. What kid is going to look in a teacher's trunk or jimmy a teacher's car? What could a kid do with an unloaded shotgun.... steal it and then have to buy the admunition?

Not only fired but criminaly charged. All employees are aware of the prohibition of guns on campus and to disregard that is inexcusable.

So, Larimer, does that mean that a teacher who teaches in a dangerous neightborhood could never carry a concealed weapon in their vehicle?

I live in the area. The "illicit drugs" were marijuana and perscription meds. The marijuana was prepackaged for distribution.

If the teacher has a CCW permit, then the authorization has to come from either the PD or School Admin after showing a need. When you enter school grounds you may see a big sign with a gun and a line through it. That means no firearms period, unless you are a certified peace officer. Stop trying to make excuses for a clearcut violation of the law.
