This is satire, pretty amusing, I think. But it gets to something real. In my town, I know tons of people now who have given up recycling because the town rules change so often and are sometimes ridiculously complicated. There's a different day for boxes than for newspapers. One month you can just fold up the boxes, the next you have to cut them up. Sometimes, it seems, you can leave newspapers out without string tied around them; other times, who knows. There are limits per week on how much you can leave out, regs on the types of containers you can or must leave them in. I'm sympathetic up to a point -- the town has limited resources, I think the officials are trying. On the other hand, it can't be a full-time job to stay up to date and meet too often convoluted, even silly, rules. Anyway, thought this piece was entertaining...

I, too, was a devoted recycler because of concern for our environment and saving a few dollars on our garbage collection. The rules, at first, were reasonable and made sense to me. Later the rules started to change and some were quite unreasonable and arbitrary. I then started recycling less and only put a few things I was sure they'd pick up and the rest got thrown with the regular trash.
