I lived in Germany not too many years after the war's end and saw the devastation of their cities which took a whole lot of bombs to accomplish. Unexploded bombs were frequently unearthed as the country rebuilt. To find such bombs this many years after is rather disturbing. Thankfully, noone was hurt in this case and hopefully what bombs do remain to be found would also have deteriorated to the point of harmlessness.

This is not at all rare in Europe. Last fall, as I was traveling there, one of the streets was blocked by the police in Budapest. The driver asked the policeman what the problem was, and was informed that some people had found a WWII bomb as they were digging around a foundation. The driver told me that this was not at all unusual.

The year before, during a rock concert held on an island in the Danube and attended by tens of thousands from all over Europe, a young man walked into the Danube to swim. He felt something strange with his foot in the mud and dragged it to shore, shouting to the others: "Look what I've found!"

Fortunately, someone in the crowd recognized it as a WWII bomb or mine, told the crowd to leave the area and called the police. They blew it up and nobody got hurt.

That's one of the problems with wars. They don't stop killing and maiming when they are over.

Wasn't a bomb found in London not too long ago? The old WWI battlefields like Verdun are still dangerous due to unexploded ordinance. It's still a common problem in Europe.

Isn't it funny how these things just keep on coming back to remind of wars in the past and here we are in a war again, what will the people after us find? You are right, the gift that just keeps on giving.

What will the people after us find? You are so right Realizer, the gift that keeps on giving. We have seen it time and time again. It is a reality.
