Posted by: bubba2 2 months, 2 weeks agoFour years after she retired from the Marine Corps, Bessie Miller - a 30-year veteran - had to fight the same military she was a part of for 3 decades. TRICARE Prime, her military insurance, had refused to pay for a procedure for her daughter, Sloan Hunter. Sloan is 18 and suffers from a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Your ranting has nothing to do with the reality of the situation. If you bothered to read the story, you'll see it took some ass-kicking, but the girl is receiving treatment covered by the insurance company.
I doubt what happened in this case is all that unusual from what many other insurance companies would do -- unfortunately.

In point of fact, this has nothing to do with the military at all except for the fact that the mom is retired military. And the patient is a child, not a "loyal soldier".
The retired military health system is a private company, just like the ones many of us have. The debate seems to have sprung from a negative prognosis early on, where the insurance company refused to allow more charges to accrue on a patient who was terminal.
Note the the article does not indicate a recovery; the prognosis is still very grim. This is a very sad story, and we should all hope for the best for Sloan.

Big Fist, I do in fact disagree with Nowalive. I think that all elected officials should have the same benefits as other government employees, no better, no worse.
If you are in favor of giving millions of veterans the obscene benefits that elected officials get, I say generate a grassroots campaign to put it on the ballot. If it passes, there will be a heck of a tax bill. Hope you're ready to pay it.

The reality is, insurance companies take money in, but they don't pay it out. After your claim gets very expensive, they will begin to deny expensive treatments on the grounds they are "experimental."
Insureds often have to sue the insurance company to get coverage for high priced claims. Most insurance companies know that insureds will give up after they have been turned down a couple of times and a terminally ill patient just gets sicker and sicker.
Insurance is a business and not a charity. Insurance companies have raked in massive profits pretty much unchecked over the last 6 years, despite the downturn in the stock market, where they speculate, because rates have gone sky high.
So when you blame sky high insurance rates on malpractice insurance, the reality is, when attorneys are capped at what they can make on cases, they don't take on cases such as these and the corporations get what they want--unchecked greed. Good luck to this woman.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present reality. Well put.
...but again, I see bigurn has negged this, he apparently doesn't believe a word your saying, and hopes this kid dies. I suspect he's involved in the insurance industry.

It is extremely sad. While GW and the REPUBLICANS continue to proclaim they support the troops instances like this pop up that continue to show the true side of them. It appears support to them starts and ends with a pat on the back, if its going to cost them money they want no part of it.

So the administration doesnt control the budget? They dont control the military? Was their a coup the media didnt report on? Seems it was THIS administration that tried to cut combat pay while soldiers are in combat, gave thhe troops the smallest raises in over 20 years, denied or made impossible to get medical assistance the vets and soldiers needed. Yeah with freinds like Republicans who needs enemies.

Although it is terrible that this brave Marine has had to suffer these issues it is equally terrible that everyday heroes (policemen, firemen, paramedics, teachers, mentors, and coaches) face these struggles EVERY SINGLE DAY because SOME insurance company automatically deny EVERY claim on the first submission. And many people don't have someone to take on the fight for them or the energy to fight it themselves.
That is why we need to get the lobbyists OUT if our government so that laws and regulations are presented and passed based on the well being of the PEOPLE not the wallet of the few.

Sorry to hear that Codi, we have two good VA hospitals near where I live, both are pretty good. Went to school on the GI Bill, no problem there. Perhaps its a local thing. I have had some problems with private hospitals and they are really expensive.
My kids have TriCare, it can be a problem..that is true. I think the marine here probably should contact his congressman.

I am glad this Marine won her fight with the insurance company. I think the lead for the story is a little misleading. I did not get from the story that she had to fight the Marine Corps to get the coverage she needed. It looked to me like it was an all out fight with the insurance company. I also agree that there needs to be something done to clear the path for better responses from insurance companys.

Its funny how easily you (the insurance industry) can put a price on life.

I once was in an accident and was injured. I decided that I would negotiate with the insurance company directly for surgery and expenses. After submitting forms over and over again, the company eventually just flat out told me they felt the surgery was unnecessary (a hernia operation) and were not going to pay my claim, which was all of $8000. This took about 6 months and I was on the verge of losing my house and had many bill collectors hounding me. The insurance company contacted them and disclosed that they were not going to pay the claim.
I hired a lawyer and within 4 weeks they paid $12,000. My lawyer got $4000, I got the $8000 I originally asked for.
Though I am against frivolous litigation, sometimes the insurance companies are just daring claimants to sue them.
In case you want to know, it was JC Penny Auto Insurance. They were the carrier of the individual that hit me.
