Posted By lenseview 5 months ago in NewsAuthor takes on suggestion (in linked piece) that standards in the burbs--education, food, taste, etc--are simply low. Is it possible to get a good dinner, see a good play, find a great school in the burbs? Is it possible to find cheese that doesn't come wrapped in plastic? Interesting, entertaining perspectives...

IMO, as with cities, every town or area is going to be different in terms of its standards, what its residents value, etc. To be disappointed because your town doesn't offer the same kinds of restaurants or cultural opportunities as larger cities is naive. Agree with author -- commuter towns adjacent to demanding, competitive cities (e.g., NYC) are going to reflect the values of those cities. If you're just outside NYC you're going to get something very different than if you're just outside Orlando, FL. (No offense, Orlando. It's just different, not better or worse.) Choices are there, but you've got to choose with eyes open...

I lived in Florida for a few months and my parents lived there as well. I have been there several times and my parents have pretty low standards since they came from Texas. Florida is horrible as far as culture and restaurants go. I couldn't even find a good cheap restaurant, let alone one that I would actually pay good money to eat at.
I will always live in the city. I love it. I love the idea that I walk to everything that I need.
The only time I have seen a suburb in the last 13 years is when I have visited some of my family. I run as fast as I can out of there.

'Is it possible to .... find a great school in the burbs'
Well one of the finest public schools in the US if not the finest school public or private in the US can be found in the suburbs of Washington DC in Fairfax County. The school is Thomas Jeffrson High School. The school has an average SAT score of 1470 which is the highest of any school in the US private or public, was given the top ranking in the Best High Schools in the United States Rankings by U.S. News & World Report, has fielded more National Merit Semifinalists than any other high school in America for most of the 1990s and 2000s, from 2000 to 2005, it fielded more USAMO qualifiers than any other high school in America and has a distinguished history of U.S. Physics Olympiad Team members and medal winners, in 2007, had more Intel Science Talent Search Semifinalists (14) than any other school, was recently ranked as the top high school in the nation by PrepReview, ...continued

For schools with more than 800 students in grades 10-12, Thomas Jefferson High School was cited as having the highest-performing AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP French Language, AP Government and Politics: U.S., and AP U.S. History courses among all schools worldwide.
However, restaurants in Fairfax County collectively suck.
