I'm not sure why the press is bringing his former service into the picture. He retired some 30 years ago. This is clearly a civil matter.
So... two young thugs try to force an old man into a room during a robbery. For that alone they should be punished. For trying to rob a Subway they should be punished.
You know what's going to happen if this continues? A outbreak of orderly society.
You only have to make an example of a few.

We have no idea if they would have let the man live they were trying to force into the bathroom. Social Darwinism at its finest.
"We must reject the idea that every time a law is broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions."

"Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit.
"Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger.
"'He should not have taken the law in his hands,' said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother."
How many times have we heard about people being killed by robbers over a few dollars? THey were trying to shove the man into a bathroom, where he very likely could have been murdered.
I'm glad the Earth is minus one less scumbag. If the former Marine "took the law into his own hands," then what does that nutty woman think her grandson was doing?
And, what the Hell is going on in Florida? Lots of whack jobs down there lately.

My oh my...what a concerned grandmother...a day late and a bullet short. Concerned parents and grandparents do their utmost to keep this from happening in the first place.
I don't revel in her pain, but there's no way in hell she can point a finger at the marine. She should be thankful for all the other young men who will make better choices based on this tragic, fatal outcome.

They were armed. He had no idea what their 'plans' were when telling him to go into that room. He did the right thing....& IMO the only thing he could do under the circumstances. The grandparents are hurting. They lost their grandson. I'll not be putting them down for venting their anger, no matter how misplaced. Hopefully, they'll understand he had no choice, eventually.

Well, it seems to me if you are going to try to commit armed robbery you are placing yourself at the risk of death.
As far as the grandparents saying the man shouldn't have shot their grandson.
What? He should have gone along with their criminal intent and possibly be murdered by them?
Get a clue your grandson made the wrong choice and paid for it.
I'm sorry for your pain, but glad that it wasn't innocent people killed.
Teach your children the price of being irresponsible especially with a weapon.
If it were my grandkids, even though I'd be hurting.
I'd say they got what they deserved for threatening others with a weapon.
Hopefully they don't go off on a rant and cause others to do he same thing.
Use this tragedy to teach others that armed robbery is wrong and can be deadly. A few bucks is not worth ones life.
Go to work for a living like honest people do.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Their grandma's philosophy is probably the reason they ended up scumbag crooks.

Certainly saves the cost of court and jail time. If the grandparents keep it up, try sueing them for slander.

Excuse me, maam, but if someone is threatening me with a gun, I'd do whatever is necessary to defend myself. Of course, that's a little matter that seems to have escaped your analysis of the situation.

My sincere condolences go out to the family of the young man that died in this incident.
With that being said, all too often in this country we see these remarks from friends and family members of the offenders.
"My son/grandson/nephew is such a good boy, he didn't deserve to be killed over this".
"He was just trying to survive".
"He would never do something like this if it weren't for his friends putting him up to it".
There was a time when there was a certain level of honor among criminals. You didn't attack the elderly, you didn't automatically kill everyone over $50, you didn't kill police officers over traffic stops, etc. Today's criminal element has no honor and they are less than bugs IMHO.
I applaud the gentleman for defending his own life.

My condolences to the family as well, and to the victims who were traumatized by the actions. It is only natural to think that your grandson should not have been shot. I'd have to suggest mental health support if they said "Good ridance! Glad he was killed!" So, I can see where they are coming from. They are wrong, but I can see where they are coming from.
I always thought that if "we" just stood up to the criminals, the occupation would become to dangerous to be profitable. "We" sit back and let the police try to figure out who murdered us as we go like sheep to the slaughter. We have made life so "safe" for the criminals there is no need for them to worry any more.

sorry my bad.. i was working on memory.. he was carrying a 9mm...
and here's a neat aspect of Florida Law.. the other perp will be charged with MURDER.....
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported at the time that the survivor of the botched robbery, Fredrick Gadson, was far from out of the woods, and would likely face multiple felony charges that could include murder. Detective Robert Rettig, a spokesman for Plantation Police, said that under Florida law, anyone who commits a felony including armed robbery that results in a death, they can actually be held accountable for the capital offense.
