First, a big Thank You to populist for the post!

Conventional wisdom holds that we are a free country. The notion that we have less liberty than we used to have is not given much thought.

The State; that means the government, as distinguished from civil society, i.e. the citizens and their privately-generated social order; grows in times of crisis. The State is ratcheted up to new heights of power, but it never gives up that power after the "crisis" has passed. And it rarely restores those liberties that were lost.

We face a choice of limited government, bound by the Chains of the Constitution, or unlimited government.

Let us not forget, our government was structured to achieve the greatest respect for citizen's rights and the least violation of our liberties.
