Another major book chronicling the descent into lawlessness of the Bush presidency is out this week. This one is by Jane Mayer of the New Yorker, and it's called "The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals."

since congress went along with this, they deserve equal credit/blame.

  I wouldn't say equal. Bush took powers that the president has never had before away from congress. I would say that the congress has had a hand in giving him some of those powers too.

    Unfortunately, Congress didn't fight the executive branch's power grab. And they helped pass legislation that gave powers Bush wanted away from the legislative branch.
    Even so, though the current Democratic-controlled Congress is partially to blame for not fighting to regain their powers, the previous Congress, controlled by Republicans, did most of the damage.
